After a summer of milky pinks, bright reds, and barely-there toes, I’m suddenly saving pedicures from the opposite end of the color chart. Black, deep navy, espresso, and wine shades are showing up while sandals are still very much outside, and I’m into the contrast. Apparently early fall can start with the pedicure.
The Dark Pedicure Trend
The idea is simple: take your usual pedicure several shades darker.
Glossy black is the obvious choice, but the trend also covers deep navy, black cherry, burgundy, espresso brown, dark plum, aubergine, and murky greens. The best shades are so deep they can look almost black indoors, then show their actual color once they hit daylight.
It also makes sense after the lighter summer pedicure colors we have been wearing for months. I’m not abandoning those forever, but September has arrived, and my milky pink bottle can have a small vacation.
Why It Works So Well Right Now
This is precisely the point of the year when my wardrobe has no idea what season it is.
I’m still wearing sandals and flip-flops, but now there are jeans, oversized shirts, and the occasional knit involved. A dark pedicure works perfectly in that middle ground. You get the first hit of autumn without dressing like it is 12 degrees outside.
There is also something excellent about dark glossy toes under straight-leg denim. Black with tan sandals, burgundy with flip-flops, and espresso against cream. The pedicure becomes part of the outfit instead of an afterthought.
The Colors Behind the Look
If you have already looked through the biggest fall nail colors for 2026, a lot of this palette will look familiar. The difference is that I would take those shades even deeper on the toes.
Black is the cleanest version. Deep navy works when you want something softer but still almost black. Black cherry and burgundy are great if red pedicures are your permanent comfort zone, while plum and aubergine bring in purple without becoming bright.
Then there are the browns. My chocolate brown pedicure obsession is clearly not going anywhere, but for this trend I would move from milk chocolate into espresso territory. Think a brown dark enough to make you question whether it is actually black until you see it in sunlight.
Dark olive and forest green also deserve a spot. They break up all the wine and brown shades while still staying firmly on the moody side.
The Finish Matters
Dark polish looks best when the finish is doing a little work too.
For classic black, navy, or espresso, I would go full-coverage crème with a very glossy top coat. Black cherry and plum can look gorgeous with a slightly translucent jelly effect, especially when a little red or purple still shows through.
Metallic charcoal and subtly shimmering navy are also good options if plain crème is not calling your name. I would just stop there. The appeal of this trend is the color itself, so there is no need to put chrome, charms, French tips, and three tiny flowers on the same big toe. It has enough responsibilities already.
How to Get the Look
Start with short, neatly shaped toenails and choose a shade darker than the one you first reach for. If you are debating between chocolate and espresso, go for espresso. Red or black cherry? Black cherry. Blue or navy? Navy.
For true black, OPI Black Onyx is an easy choice with its smooth glossy finish.
For the espresso-brown side of the trend, Essie No To-Do is a deep coffee brown with red undertones and an opaque cream finish. That is much closer to what I want here than a standard medium chocolate.
If navy wins, Essie After School Boy Blazer is a blue-black cream that gets properly dark without losing the blue completely.
And purple girls already know where this is going. OPI Lincoln Park After Dark is the classic near-black purple, sitting right in that aubergine territory this trend does so well. Two coats, glossy top coat, sandals back on.
Final Verdict
